This story has been told in many different ways, with different characters involved. So who knows what the true story is? Truth aside, the message is really good and worth pondering if you're not where you want to be in life...
It seems that there's a young man who asked Socrates what's the secret to success. Socrates told the young man to follow him, and then took him out to the lake. In they went until they were both about chest high. Then Socrates grabbed the young man's head and pushed it under water.
At first the young man didn't resist, as he thought it was some sort of ritual like baptism or similar. But then as he ran out of air he began struggling, and Socrates continued to hold him down under water.
At last Socrates let him up, and the man stood up quickly, gasping ...coughing.
When he had regained his breath, Socrates asked, when you were under water, what is the one thing you desired more than anything?
Air of course! the young man replied.
Socrates nodded. When you desire success as much as you desired air, then you will discover the secret of success.

Create A Realistic Time-Frame For Accomplishment
Setting a target date is essential to the effective completion of each of the goals you have listed for your life. A target date is the realistic date by which you think your goal can be completed or reached. A target date is based in part on desire and in part on what is both possible and practical.
As you write each of your goals, set an initial target date for its completion. Since, in general, a goal is something you intend to have accomplished within one year, your target date will normally fall within the next twelve months. There is, of course, a fine line between desire and possibility. Though you might desire to accomplish your goal by tomorrow at the latest, the reality is that the accomplishment of any goal takes time. The amount of time required is usually a function of the resources, money, and knowledge needed, as well as the number of other steps you must take to accomplish the goal. Your aim is to pick a target date that combines the best of desire with the best of what's possible.
There is also a fine line between realism and doubt. Once you have written a goal, negative thoughts can creep into and muddy the process. Thoughts like "I don't really have the money or the smarts" may make the goal seem unattainable, or the time it will take seem infinite. You have within you the absolute power to accomplish any realistic goal on your list, so mentally eliminate doubt from the process at the out-set.
When you first write any goal on your list, you probably won't have at hand all the resources required for its eventual accomplishment. If you did, it is a safe bet that your goal would already be a reality. Your strategy in picking a target date is to calculate mentally the reasonable time it will take you to gather the resources and the additional knowledge necessary to achieve your goal. Don't spend a lot of time picking your target date, since later you will have the option of lengthening or even shortening it as you discover in more detail what will be required.
Setting target dates for all your goals establishes the velocity at which you will work to achieve them. If you double the time you expect it will take to achieve each goal, obviously you have to put in only half as much effort and time each day to meet your target date. However, the downside is you could have accomplished twice as much in the same amount of time and you will not experience the same level of satisfaction that you would from accomplishing more in less time.
Conversely, if your target dates are not realistic and far too short to be practical, you can create feelings of frustration because things are not happening according to schedule, or you may even begin to feel that you are just not a person capable of achievement. Feelings of frustration and self-doubt are unnecessary and can be eliminated by setting realistic target dates. There is no way to cook a three-minute egg in two minutes. Reaching goals does take time. Push yourself into action but allow yourself adequate time.

The more effectively you can measure a goal, the more likely you are to complete the goal because progress itself is a tremendous encourager. Even though you can't see progress by the day, you will by the end of the week - or certainly by the end of the month.
Many people set goals that are completely out of reach, whereas others set them so low that they represent no challenge. Both approaches are unrealistic. Many people knowingly set impossible goals so that they have a built-in excuse for not achieving those goals. This practice is clearly self-defeating. You must have a realistic chance of reaching a goal, combined with a belief that you will reach it, in order for it to have long-range motivational impact.
For example, because weight loss is on the minds of more than two thirds of the people in the United States - and well it should be - people often fall victim to empty promises, such as "lose 30 pounds in 30 days without getting hungry and without exercising!" That goal isn't realistic. You didn't gain that weight in a month, and you're not going to lose it in a month. Permanent weight loss comes only with a change in lifestyle.
My Father was on that weight-loss roller coaster for 24 years before he understood that the problem was his lifestyle. He spent too much time on the couch, too much time at the dinner table, and not enough time exercising. His weight-loss goals, though temporarily attainable, were permanently destined to fail because he expected to take the weight off quickly and keep it off permanently without an exercise program. However, when my Father realized that he was able to get into a smaller suit after every ten pounds of weight loss, he was motivated to lose the ten pounds so that he could "justify" the purchase of a new suit.
You also need an accomplishment-point if the goal can be measured in that way. Formulate a plan of action with a deadline that enables you to measure your progress in incremental steps - as my Father did by aiming to lose ten pounds at a time. Simply determining that you will, say, clean out the garage by a specific date helps you to claim the time that you need to accomplish the goal. You may choose to spend two hours each Saturday for the next six Saturdays or spend an entire Saturday on the project. Name the increments according to your needs. Make your goals fit your lifestyle.

Attitude - we know that since we become what we think about, the most outwardly identifiable characteristic or manifestation of what we are thinking about is our attitude and we know that a positive mental attitude is an absolutely indispensable prerequisite for success.
The difference between positive thinkers and negative thinkers is very simple - positive thinkers think and talk continually about solutions, and negative thinkers continually think and talk about problems. From this point onward, keep your mind and your conversation and all of your thoughts and activities focused on the
various solutions that are possible, with all the benefits.

totally caused by being brought up with a feeling that one does not deserve good things to happen to us.
It is essential to eliminate destructive self-criticism. Never criticize yourself for anything and never allow anybody else to say anything about you that is destructive or negative. Don't allow negatives about yourself of any kind. The basic rule is this - never say anything about yourself that you do not sincerely desire to be true.
When we accept responsibility, we look to the future and to what we can do, but when we blame, we look to the past and to what cannot be undone or changed. This is very important - responsibility looks forward and blame looks backward.
